Artery thrombosis (blood clot). Stock medical illustration

from £21.00

A thrombus (more commonly known as a blood clot) can be found in vessels where blood coagulates. There are two components to a thrombus: the aggregation of platelets and red blood cells that form a plug, and a fibrous mesh made up of the fibrin protein.

In thrombosis, the formation of a blood clot inside a vessel can obstruct the flow of blood in the circulatory system. This can be potentially dangerous and life-threatening as clots that occur in the heart can cause a heart attack (myocardial infarction) or clots can occur in the brain and cause a stroke.

Atherosclerosis is a disease process where plaque builds up in artery walls over a period of time. This gradually narrows the blood vessel passageway and can lead to the development of a blood clot because the red blood cells cannot squeeze through.
